Abney Catahoulas
Owner: Don Abney
Abita Springs, LA 70420

I was afforded the opportunity at an early age to learn dog training. My father taught me the basics of training, but it was not until I was an adult that I really understood what he had taught me. I became a professional dog trainer in 1980, and have enjoyed years of active involvement with many breeds in a wide variety of disciplines. I have owned various breeds of dogs and some mixed breeds, but the Catahoula has always been my passion.
Abney Catahoulas is located approximately 60 miles Northeast of New Orleans on 5 1/2 acres in beautiful Abita Springs, Louisiana. Our facility is constantly being upgraded to provide the best of care for our Catahoulas. We have access to and utilize the expertise of five veterinarians that are familiar with Catahoulas and our dogs in particular. This gives us the privilege of having one of them available to us in the case of an emergency, or to retrieve information. Each has worked to educate us in their various fields of expertise. This has resulted in our accumulating thousands of hours of information and training on the care and well being of our animals, and those entrusted to our care.
Abney Catahoulas have been placed all over the Continental United States, as well as many other countries. In the spring of 1998 we placed the first Catahoula in Amsterdam, Holland, and in the fall of 1998 we placed the first Catahoula in Helsinki, Finland.
Abney Canine Training has evolved into a full-scale training facility that offers a wide variety of training and behavior modification at reasonable prices. Please visit our training site, www.abcantra.com (Abney Canine Training), for information on Behavior Modifications, Obedience, Conformation and Showmanship, Tracking, Blood Trailing, Search and Rescue (all facets), Arson and Narcotics Detection, and Training Tips for any breed.

Our facility is located in the small community of Pleasant Garden NC, eight miles south of Greensboro, N.C. We are a licensed facility.
ALL PARENTS ARE ON SITE. Our puppies leave the facility at seven to eight weeks. We have several females and will have a litter available soon. We offer most colors.
Our eight year breeding program includes being very selective in choosing our breeders. We attribute this to their not having genetic problems and for having beautiful, healthy puppies. Most of our puppies are sold before the litters are born. Customer names will be placed on our waiting list as deposits are received. There is no guarantee a puppy will be available to anyone not making a deposit.
VISITORS TO THE FACILITY: All visitation is by appointment only. We are very busy in the birthing rooms, on the grounds with staff, very involved in paperwork, with customers, returning phone calls, off site, etc. We want your visit to be as pleasant as possible, so please call the facility at 336-676-0404 and schedule an appointment.
After leaving the birthing room, mothers and puppies are placed in the nursery. Puppies begin their 'potty training' in this confined space with their mothers which is only a few feet from their pads. Once taken home, you can gradually increase this space. Putting pads/paper down and giving the puppy 'run of the house' is not a good idea . The puppy may wander too far and not be able to find it's way back to the pads/paper and soil the floor. Potty training takes time with clear instructions and patience. Too many instructions only confuses the puppy. NEVER SPANK FOR SOILING. Puppy care sheets are given with each purchase.
All puppies need plenty of exercise. As with any dog, without the proper amount of interaction with their families and proper exercise, they can become depressed. They are pack animals and you are their family. They should not be left alone for long periods of time.
We do not believe in tying dogs outside. This is cruel and inhumane.
It's important to Rush Kennel that those making a purchase from us are serious and are not buying on a 'whim'. Dog ownership takes a lot of time, money, and energy. If you are not sure you are ready to meet a puppies needs at this time, please consider making a purchase when you are more prepared. We will be happy to help you at that time.
I have a specialty shop at the facility called Doggie Boutique. We sell items that you might be interested in when taking your puppy home such as collars, leashes, dog food, water/food dishes, shampoos, flea/tick control, books, toys, beds, blankets, clothes, jewerly, and many, many, more items.
Last, but not least, DO NOT HIT YOUR PUPPY. This will only make it harder for it to follow instructions and causes anxiety and mistrust. Nature has instilled certain behaviors in them and only time, clear instruction and patience will change this behavior. Like babies they need to be taught gently. You are speaking an unknown language to them and have taken them away from their mother and siblings into a new environment. Your puppy wants desperately to please you. You will be rewarded with a dog that will love you and be well adjusted and healthy.
It will be to your advantage to spend time before taking your puppy home to learn all you can about it's care. Search the internet, go to your local library, purchase your own books and talk to responsible owners. The more informed you are about dog ownership, the less anxious you will be in having a new puppy in your home.
If you are interested in making a purchase, please call Rush Kennel at 336-676-0404. We will be happy to answer your questions. If no one is available to take your call, please leave a detailed message including phone number, breed, sex, and color of puppy. Your call will be returned at our earliest convenience. Serious callers only.
OUR GOAL AT RUSH KENNEL IS TO PLACE OUR PUPPIES IN LOVING, SAFE, AND RESPONSIBLE HOMES.
We sell pet quality puppies and recommend you spay or neuter.
